Reading performance in glaucoma.

چکیده
In clinical setting, visual field is the most important functional measure for staging and monitoring progression of disease. However, visual field poorly reflects the impact of glaucoma on daily activities. Weak associations have been reported between various visual field measures and visual disability using different questionnaires [1,2]. Selfperceived visual disability is a subjective measure and is influenced by other factors such as co-morbidities, personality type, gender, social and educational level, and use of topical medication [3-5]. Therefore, measuring task performance may represent a more objective measure to understand how glaucoma affects daily activities.

Using Eye Tracking to Assess Reading Performance in Patients with Glaucoma: A Within-Person Study
Reading is often cited as a demanding task for patients with glaucomatous visual field (VF) loss, yet reading speed varies widely between patients and does not appear to be predicted by standard visual function measures. This within-person study aimed to investigate reading duration and eye movements when reading short passages of text in a patient's worse eye (most VF damage) when compared to ...

متن کاملIntraocular Pressure Measurements by Three Different Tonometers in Children with Aphakic Glaucoma and a Thick Cornea
Background: To evaluate the agreement in intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements by Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) and Tono-Pen XL (TXL) with the Goldmann Applanation Tonometer (GAT) and to examine corneal biomechanical properties in aphakic glaucoma patients with a central corneal thickness (CCT) >600 µ. Methods: Thirty-six eyes of aphakic glaucoma patients (group 1) and 40 eyes of normal chil...
متن کاملDifficulty with out-loud and silent reading in glaucoma.
PURPOSE We evaluated the impact of glaucoma on out-loud and silent reading. METHODS. Glaucoma patients with bilateral visual field (VF) loss and normally-sighted controls had the following parameters measured: speed reading an International Reading Speed Text (IReST) passage out loud, maximum out-loud MNRead chart reading speed, sustained (30 minutes) silent reading speed, and change in reading...
متن کاملSlow Reading in Glaucoma: Is it due to the Shrinking Visual Span in Central Vision?
Purpose Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, characterized by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells. Patients with bilateral glaucoma read slower than normal cohorts. Here we examined the factors that may underlie slow reading in glaucoma and determined the best predictor of reading speed in glaucoma. Methods A total of 38 subjects participated in this study: 17 patients w...
متن کاملReading ability and reading engagement in older adults with glaucoma.
PURPOSE We evaluated the impact of glaucoma-related vision loss on reading ability and reading engagement in 10 reading activities. METHODS A total of 63 glaucoma patients and 59 glaucoma suspect controls self-rated their level of reading difficulty for 10 reading items, and responses were analyzed using Rasch analysis to determine reading ability. Reading engagement was assessed by asking su...
